Through English 101 I believe that my writing has improved through writing and producing media in many different styles to come together in a single, cohesive end product. We've had to research scholarly articles, write blog posts, create an info-graphic, create a website, and we've had to present on our topic. Working with all of these different types of media has improved my writing by making me more versatile and overall I am most proud of my work on my review of literature. Originally my review of literature only used two scholarly sources and was two paragraphs long. After a couple drafts it now has a third paragraph and has more information from three other scholarly sources. I will transfer my writing skills learned in this class by writing formal papers with more of my voice and opinions without making the writing sound colloquial. This skill is transferable from the blog posts because those are written in a more informal manner that is shorter and more accessible than long articles and books. Taking the personality found in blog posts and using it in formal papers without using pronouns like “I” and “we” makes them interesting and lively. This idea goes along with some of the rhetorical terms that we’ve learned in this class because a good piece of writing has a strong sense of purpose and a controlling idea to keep the paper organized. And to have these things in a piece of writing it is necessary for the author to have formed an opinion on the topic and truly care about what they are writing about. No one wants to read an article that even the author isn’t interested in. Terms like situation, purpose, and genre have been used in previous writing courses of mine but this course really pushed the basic but necessary ideas of writing into my mind. Before trying to write an essay, article, book, etc. the author should know who the stakeholders and audience of that piece of writing will be and what the rhetoric situation of their writing is. Overall, English 101 has given me a fresh take on writing and, in the future, I will try and take a fresh and personal viewpoint on all of the topics I’m writing about without putting too much bias and opinion into the writing. This is a skill I could’ve used in my previous history and science classes. Simply putting more thought or caring into the lab report I was putting together would’ve made it a more interesting piece of writing that I would want to write and my teacher would want to read. It is convenient that in English 101 we got to chose our own topic, making it easier to care about the subject, however, I can still apply my rhetorical knowledge to other pieces of writing that I don’t necessarily want to write about. Knowing my audience, purpose, point of view, organization, etc. of my writing piece will make it better as it will have a clear flow. English 101 was a good foundation for future writing courses and I am excited to apply my skills taken from this class elsewhere.
